Moses and the burning bush - Dirk Bouts
Dirk Bouts – was one of the most important Dutch painters of the 15th century, a representative of the Flemish school .
One of the first Northern European painters to use linear perspective.
Among his most important works are:
Moses and the burning bush
Adoration of the Three Kings
Altar of the Eucharist
Triptych of the Crucifixion
Moses and the burning bush
This painting , which combines Gothic realism with deep religious symbolism, depicts the biblical scene from the Book of Exodus, where God reveals Himself to Moses in a burning bush. This is the moment of Moses’ calling to lead the Israelites out of Egypt
In the background of the painting, we see Moses removing his sandals, an act of respect to the sanctity of the place where God revealed Himself.
In the foreground, Moses kneels in front of a bush, from which the figure of Christ emerges. The bush is placed centrally , but does not dominate. The figure of Christ in a halo is typical of the symbolism of medieval iconography.
The scene symbolizes the presence of God and His holiness. The burning bush, which is not burned, is a metaphor for the divine presence and power, as well as a symbol of eternity and indestructibility. The painting was created between 1458 and 1464.

Text:
Here You have established the throne of Your mercy
To gladden and help sinful man,
From Your open Heart, as from a spring of purity,
Flows consolation to the repentant soul and heart.
Thou dost cause Thy Holy Image to be painted
And You reveal to us the fountain of mercy incomprehensible,
You bless whoever approaches Your rays,
And the black soul shall turn into snow ,
O, great that soul, when amidst suffering,
Stands faithfully by God,
And amidst, the greatest rainbows and storms, ,
For God’s pure love sweetens her plight,
You make to paint Your holy image ,
And You reveal to us the fountain of mercy incomprehensible,
You bless whoever approaches Your rays,
And the black soul shall turn into snow.
